Latest news

It is important that we advocate for migrants as well as helping them with their applications. At the moment, the English language requirements for residency are set too high. The TV One News article is part of a campaign by The New Zealand Association for Migration and Investment, which I am a board member of, to pressure Government to reduce the level to IELTS5.0.

Thanks Maya Hasegawa for subtitling this article by repórter James Fleury from Friday evening’s One News.

NZAMI, whose board I serve on, is asking Immigration Minister Hon Erica Stanford MP to lower the English language requirement for skilled migrants to IELTS 5.0, in line with the recently announced Business Investor resident visa category.

It makes no sense to require trades and care workers to have university level English (IELTS 6.5) while business investors who will need to interact with clients, employees, unions and financiers only require conversational level English (IELTS 5.0).

The Government needs to be consistent and fair with its English language requirements for residency.

Too often I hear people talking about workers in professions having inadequate English.

The English language requirements for professions which require occupational registration like medicine and teaching are set at a higher level by the relevant registration authority, so immigration instructions do not need to set unreasonably high levels of English for all migrants.

Conversational English is sufficient, both to run a business and fix the engine of your car.
